Houmt souk What fun to walk down the shady streets of Houmt Souk, the capital of the island! The white flowered squares and bougainvillea houses exude a calm that reminds us that Odysseus himself almost never leave this beautiful island.
Very reputable, souks of Houmt Souk is a small maze of covered porches where various stalls abound. Fabrics, carpets, tourist souvenirs but goldsmith workshops punctuate your journey here and there. Do not miss the jewelers bazaar, the most remarkable of all!

Besides the souks, discover fondouks. These buildings, called caravanserai, greeted merchants passage; they served both a warehouse, a store to sell goods and hostel for these nomadic traders. Today, most of which was converted into a hotel. Set around a courtyard and often with a well in the center, fondouks had upstairs a series of cells. To see a nice fondouk, go to the hotel Arisha (up Arisha) or that of Marhala (street Moncef Bey).

Mosques Houmt Souk also worth a look, even if it is not possible to visit them. Sidi Ibrahim el Jemni mosque with its sloping roof, the mosque of the Turks in Ottoman-style grand minaret and mosque Foreigners are the most interesting examples.

Finally, the strong Ghazi Mustapha Borj el Kebir or located on the harbor, was built by Sultan Abu Fares in the fifteenth century. The Spaniards took refuge in vain in 1560 and were massacred. The walkway, you will have a beautiful view of the countryside.
